Monaco began his career at Polygram, the company which would later become UMG, after he sold his own Landmark Distribution company to the firm in 1989.
Monaco became Senior VP/GM of indie distribution service ILS at Polygram, before being named General Manager of Island Records in 1996, where he reported into label Chairman Chris Blackwell.
After Polygram was sold to Seagram in 1999 and UMG was born, Monaco moved into the corporate group’s Motown division, later being promoted to EVP of Sales and Field Marketing for the Universal Motown Republic Group.

A decade later, in 2009, he was named EVP & General Manager of Universal Motown Records, before being appointed as EVP of Sales & Production for the Island Def Jam Music Group in 2011.
When Monaco became GM of Universal Motown Records in 2009, then-Motown President Sylvia Rhone (now President of Sony‘s Epic) said:
